The United Neighborhood Organization (UNO) is a grassroots non-profit organization that has engaged Chicagoland Hispanics in American civic life for over twenty years. UNO works with more than 13,000 individuals each year in the areas of education, parent involvement, leadership training, immigration, health care, and economic development.
Also a long-time advocate on issues of education, UNO put its philosophies to the test by establishing the Octavio Paz Charter School in 1998. Because of the continued academic success at Octavio Paz, UNO has replicated its model to six Chicago campuses and its first campus outside of Chicago the Esperanza Charter School in New Orleans. UNO Charter Schools currently serve over 2,500 kindergarten through eighth grade students across the country. UNO's expansion efforts will continue in 2008 with the opening of two additional elementary campuses and its first high school campus, all to be located on Chicago's southwest side.
